What Is Management?

LMU's Management major teaches students to successfully plan, organize and lead an organization. The curriculum focuses on the practical skills, ethical issues and management theory necessary to succeed in the diverse global economy.

Majors come to understand the critical role that management plays in an organization. Students learn the principal methods, models and concepts of management, and how to apply them to real-life settings. Coursework incorporates theory, strategy, and real-world case studies in areas such as management policy, compensation and rewards, training and development, human resources, employee and labor relations, and international management. 

What Do Management Majors Do?

Management majors learn where power comes from and how to exercise it effectively. They learn the traits, styles and behaviors of effective and charismatic leaders. The curriculum delves into different types of leadership, such as team, transformational, and strategic. Coursework examines activities that enhance the development of leadership. 

Management majors learn to think strategically for firms in both domestic and foreign settings by integrating knowledge culled from specific functional disciplines. Majors then learn to use models to analyze a firm's competitive situation and resources. They then learn to develop and articulate corporate and business strategies and formulate organization plans.

About Our Faculty

Our faculty members are experts in fields such as entrepreneurial finance, social entrepreneurship, technology management, international joint ventures, strategic alliances, global strategic management, strategies in emerging economies, corporate governance, mentoring, diversity, and organizational behavior.

Faculty members have experience as entrepreneurs, consultants and business leaders. They are quoted in the news media, have served as presidents of associations, and have advised firms from biotechnology startups to multinational conglomerates. As active researchers and writers, faculty members have been published in, Human Resource Development Quarterly, Leadership Quarterly, and MIT Sloan Management Review

About Our Students and Graduates

Our students earn internships, study abroad, and graduate prepared to continue their studies in master of business administration programs at LMU and elsewhere. Graduates immediately step into leadership positions in a wide range of businesses, from startups to established firms.
