Charting New Paths as a First-Generation Transfer Student
As a first-generation college student, Nina Payne was nervous about starting her collegiate journey. But as a first-generation transfer student, it’s safe to say that her nerves were heightened. So, choosing the right university to help her acclimate to a new environment – with the right foundation to help her thrive – was especially important to the East Los Angeles native.
Like others, Payne loved LMU’s campus, but its sense of familiarity was a driving factor for her decision. “I chose LMU because I knew it for many years,” Payne reflected. “I remember visiting LMU on a field trip in middle school, and I heard great things from alumni.” And it didn’t hurt that it was a hop, skip, and a jump away from home on a good traffic day.
A psychology major in the LMU Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts, Payne seized the opportunities available to her as a transfer student, including her participation in one of LMU’s guaranteed transfer programs. In 2023, LMU was honored on the Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Honor Roll for the eighth consecutive year for creating dynamic pathways to support transfer students. The designation exemplifies LMU's commitment to nurturing transfer talent, encouraging lifelong learning, and developing transfer students into future leaders. For Payne, participating in a guarantee program was instrumental to her success on the Bluff.
“It helped to make the overall transfer process easier,” she shared. “The transfer team was always helpful and available to answer questions – from course transferability to financial aid – and provided the resources to help ease me into my transfer to LMU. Through the program, I also met other transfer students, some of whom I’ve remained friends with throughout my years at LMU and who helped me along the way!”
Her positive experience with the program inspired her to pay it forward. She was a student worker for LMU’s Transfer Admission office and is an active member of the LMU Pride, participating in beloved campus traditions like Fallapalooza, Wellness Wednesday, and LMU’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting.
“LMU has supported my college experience with various learning opportunities – in and outside the classroom – especially in student resources,” Payne said. “One example that comes to mind is Student Employment Services. With their guidance, I secured an on-campus job that I enjoyed and where I learned many new skills.”
As she looks to share key insights with Future Lions, Payne reflects on the positive environment of her classes and the broader LMU community, crediting these as key experiences that helped her feel comfortable as a transfer student and fueled her growth on the Bluff. She advises future Lions to make the most of their college experience – to find the balance between studies and campus life. “It’s important to try your best in your classes but also give yourself time to go to school events, spend time with friends, and for other things you enjoy. Whether you’re a transfer student or have been here for four years, it goes by fast. Cherish all that you can.”
